The ill are like fairies
folding time into the hill.

The Walkative Revolution: a meditation on walking and 'not-walking’.

When chronic illness constrained the poet’s ability to move through the world, he reconsidered what it is to walk, be a walker, or a ‘not-walker’, and creatively adapt to limit. Listening to walking groups and ‘not-walkers’ alike, Finlay assembled this ambitious body of poems and images, including innovative forms, manifestos, ‘conspectus’ visual poems, and poems for walking sticks. The Walkative Revolution reflects how walking together can change the ways we care for places, how imaginative access alters our perception of the landscape, and how new forms, such as ‘proxy walks’ and minor walks, offer models of solidarity.

Alec Finlay is an artist and poet whose work considers how we relate to landscape and ecology. Through permanent and temporary interventions, integrative web-based projects, and publications, Finlay weaves together experiential works, often collaborative, sometimes mapped directly onto the landscape, embedded socially or accessed online. Recently Finlay's work has focussed on place-awareness and ecopoetics.
